  1. Dear Jeffrey, this is an interesting idea. I can see that it would work well with a variety of students. The only caution I personally would suggest is to be well aware of the cultural makeup of the class. I wouldn’t want to use this lesson at all if there were any students in the class whose religious tradition or laws forbid tattooing. This would include many Jews and Muslims, and also a minority of Christians. Although tattooing is not forbidden among more liberal Jews, I still think that many find the idea abhorrent because of the tattooing done in the Holocaust. I know they are only designing tattoos, not putting them on themselves. However, in some classroom situations the exercise might cause discomfort. Needless to say, I’m sure you are an awesome teacher.

    1. Thank you for the feedback. You make a great point. I used the lesson just twice, each time in an impoverished urban high school and with classes consisting of African American and Hispanic students. About half of them had tattoos prior to turning 18, which prompted me to design the lesson in an attempt to appeal to their interests. Naturally, any teacher using the lesson would need to anticipate the reaction of students (and possibly parents) based on cultural and religious norms. The lesson wouldn’t be appropriate across settings, but it might work well with select students. Again, thanks for reading and for your input.
